But if you&amp;rsquo;re trying to get rid of old, stubborn coatings on an airframe, you have to stop thinking about &amp;ldquo;drying&amp;rdquo; and start thinking about breaking things down.&#xA;That&amp;rsquo;s where shortwave infrared (SWIR) comes in. Instead of just warming the surface, these lamps punch right through the paint to heat the metal underneath. It basically forces the bond between the primer and the skin to give up.&#xA;&lt;strong&gt;Why this beats a heat gun&lt;/strong&gt;&#xA;If you use a standard heat gun or longwave IR, you&amp;rsquo;re just heating the top layer. It takes forever. Worse, you risk cooking the aluminum skin around the area you&amp;rsquo;re working on.&#xA;Shortwave IR is different. It hits harder and deeper. Once that spot where the paint meets the metal hits the right temperature, the coating starts to blister. From there, you just peel or scrape it off. It saves you from spending an entire weekend sanding by hand.&#xA;&lt;strong&gt;The gear you actually need&lt;/strong&gt;&#xA;You can&amp;rsquo;t just use any bulb. You need high watt-density quartz tubes. We use these because they cram a lot of energy into a very tight band.&#xA;We also stick with halogen-filled quartz envelopes. Why? Because stripping takes a lot of current, and cheaper lamps will just burn out. Just make sure you&amp;rsquo;ve got a controlled power supply—nobody wants a hotspot warping a wing.&#xA;&lt;strong&gt;The reality on the shop floor&lt;/strong&gt;&#xA;Look, this isn&amp;rsquo;t a &amp;ldquo;set it and forget it&amp;rdquo; kind of tool.&#xA;If you leave a high-wattage lamp in one spot for too long, you&amp;rsquo;re going to warp the skin or mess up the alloy&amp;rsquo;s heat treatment. You&amp;rsquo;ve got to keep it moving. I&amp;rsquo;d suggest a handheld gantry or a mobile array to keep things fluid.&#xA;And for the love of everything, check your fans. These lamps throw off a staggering amount of heat. If your ventilation is garbage, the shop will turn into a sauna in minutes, and your techs are going to hate you.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
