Getting Aircraft Paint to Dry Without Baking the Plane
When you’re dealing with aircraft logos or those complex livery patterns, you can’t just throw the whole fuselage in an oven. You need heat, but you need it exactly where the paint is—and nowhere else. That’s where infrared (IR) lamps come in. We basically tune the light waves to “talk” to the paint, making sure the coating absorbs the heat while the rest of the plane stays cool.
Picking the Right Waveband
Here’s the thing about drying: it depends on what you’re actually painting. If you just need the surface to dry fast, go withshort-wave IR. It hits the top layer hard and kicks the solvents out quickly. It’s fast. Really fast. But if you’re working with a thick primer or a heavy topcoat, you’ll wantmedium-wave IR. It sinks deeper into the paint. This is huge because it stops “skinning”—that annoying problem where the top dries into a shell, traps the wet solvents underneath, and leaves you with a bunch of tiny bubbles or pinholes. Nobody wants to sand that back off.
The Nitty-Gritty on Power
We look at these lamps in terms of wattage per square inch. High-wattage quartz tubes are the way to go if you want to flash-dry a logo in a matter of seconds. Just a heads-up: make sure your shop’s power grid can actually handle the voltage. If the voltage drops, the lamp loses its punch, and you’re just wasting time. Also, remember that short-wave lamps gethot. Like, really hot. You absolutely need a timing controller. If you leave the lamp on a second too long, you’ll scorch the surface or mess up the chemical bond of the paint.
Making it Work in the Shop
We usually mount these on handheld tools or robotic arms for spot-curing. It’s way easier than trying to move a massive airframe into a curing oven. But there’s a catch. Short-wave IR is powerful, but it has a very tight focus. You have to be precise with your distance. Hold the lamp too close, and you’ll burn right through the paint. Hold it too far away, and the energy just vanishes into the air, doubling your dry time. It’s all about finding that sweet spot.
