If you’re looking to replace your Sidel Matrix lamps, you already know that just matching the wattage isn’t enough. It’s not that simple. If the heat doesn’t hit the preform exactly the way the original did, you’re going to have a bad time. We spent a lot of time making sure our IR lamps act like a mirror image of the originals. The goal is simple: get your preform to that sweet spot—the glass transition temperature—without scorching the neck or leaving the base cold.
The nitty-gritty of the heat
Here’s the thing about temperature ramp-up. It all comes down to the filament geometry and the resistance. If the wattage looks right on paper but the voltage drop is off, your heat density shifts. That’s how you end up with those annoying “cold spots” you see with generic lamps. We spec our tubes to fit the Sidel Matrix power supply perfectly. Plus, we use high-purity quartz, so the IR radiation actually gets into the PET material instead of bouncing off.
Fitting them in
Installing these is easy. We kept the same footprint and connector specs as the Sidel units. You can just swap them out. No messing with your wiring, no bending brackets, no headaches. We also make sure the filaments are centered with tight tolerances. Why? Because you need the heat to hit the preform evenly. One quick tip: I’ve seen some shops try to “over-spec” the wattage to squeeze out a bit more speed.**Don’t do that.**Pushing more power than the machine was built for is a shortcut to burning out your lamps and warping your preforms. It’s just not worth it.
A few things to watch for
These lamps pack a punch. They provide the high heat density you need for fast cycles, but that means they throw off a lot of ambient heat. This is where your maintenance comes in. Your oven’s ventilation and cooling fans need to be spotless and working perfectly. If your airflow is choked, the heat builds up inside the housing and eats away at the quartz envelope. Keep your blow-off air steady. Do that, and these lamps will keep your production line humming.
