
Fixing the Heat Headache in KHS Blow Molding Lines
Ever look at your PET bottles and see those annoying pearlescent streaks or, worse, burnt spots? It’s a nightmare. Usually, it comes down to one thing: your KHS blow molder isn’t heating things evenly. When that heat field drifts, you end up with thin walls and weak spots that make your bottles feel cheap or, worse, fail under pressure. We got tired of seeing this happen, so we built replacement lamps that actually do what they’re supposed to. We matched the spectral output and thermal footprint exactly so those heat zones finally stay stable.
Getting the Heat Right
Most KHS setups use short-wave infrared to get deep into the PET preform fast. But here’s the thing: a lot of lamps have “cold spots” at the ends. It’s frustrating. We fixed that by obsessing over the wattage-to-length ratio and tightening the tolerance on how the tungsten filament is centered. This kills the “edge effect”—that annoying drop-off in heat near the connectors. If your current lamps are swinging in temperature, it’s probably because the filament winding is sloppy or the quartz isn’t pure enough.
The Nitty-Gritty on Fit and Feel
We use high-purity fused quartz. Why? Because nothing is worse than a lamp that clouds up way too early. These are simple drop-in replacements. They fit standard KHS footprints perfectly. We also precision-mold the ends so the lamp seats firmly in the socket. You don’t want a loose fit. A loose fit leads to electrical arcing, and that’s a quick way to fry your connector. And since we’ve spec’d these for high-voltage stability, you get a steady IR emission even when your power fluctuates. Just a heads-up: if you crank up the wattage to speed up your cycle times, your reflectors are going to take a hit.**Keep those reflectors polished.**If you don’t, that extra heat will just bake any residue right onto the glass.
Setting Them Up
Once you wire these in, you’ll notice the heat gradient across the preform feels much more linear. Because we optimized the emissivity of the quartz, you might even find you can dial back the oven temperature a bit without losing any bottle quality. That’s a win. It takes the pressure off your cooling blow-pins and just makes everything run smoother.
